My name is Jackie and
I live near Sydney, Australia.
For almost 7 years I suffered chronic health problems due to an
untreated Blastocystis hominis and Dientamoeba fragilis infection
(full story here).
Seven
years passed before I found a specialist who would consider a connection
between Dientamoeba fragilis and my chronic health problems.
Until 2001 all eight specialist gastroenterologists I consulted
refused to acknowledged the research I had collected on D.fragilis.
They would not acknowledge the importance of specialised stool collection
and testing methods for accurate detection of Dientameoba fragilis;
the validity and accuracy of my 1994 stool test results for D.f.,
by a specialised private lab were constantly under question; and
specialised drug treatments, other than standard antibiotics and
Flagyl, were considered by the specialsts as unnecessary.
The
specialist I met in 2001 arranged for specialised stool collection
and testing methods - considered by all the published literature
on this parasite as necessary for accurate detection. The result
was that seven years after the first positive result, D.fragilis
was still present, and Blastocycstis hominis was also diagnosed.
After specialised drug treatment I regained
regained 14 kilos (30lb).
The discovery of Blastocystis hominis and Dientamoeba fragilis in
the early 1900s led to a protracted medical debate about the true
pathogenic nature of these parasites.
Despite the wealth of published and anecdotal evidence spanning
the past 50 years showing these parasites are a frequent cause of
intestinal disorders - these studies have been largely disputed.
The result is that many people with these parasites often suffer
years of ill health often misiagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome
(IBS), or the symptoms are considered to be psychosmatic.
Many of
those infected are either refused treatment or treated with drugs
with questionable effectiveness against these parasites.
Th
site was set up in 1997 to provide the medically documented information
about these parasites, and to help others avoid
the suffering I experienced as a direct result of medical blindness
about these parasites.
