Hi,
After years of misery re - loose stools etc, I have been diagnosed with a
moderate amount of D fragilis by Great Smokies Diagnostic laboratory
.

I have found your web site fascinating and also a huge relief.

My problem is made more complicated by the fact that I am allergic to aspirin
and I have just been put on a low salicylate diet. The dietician I am
currently seeing is being very supportive. Apparently people who are
allergic to aspirin can be intolerant to AZO - Dyes etc. which can be a
problem with medicinal drugs.

My doctor isn't at all convinced about D. fragilis after some persuasion he let me have Metronidazole, but I only lasted 4 days before side effects set
in and was told to stop taking it.

I live in the UK. In your experience is their anyone in England who deals with D. fragilis as a problem and which drug is best tolerated by sensitive individuals?

I was also wondering if there is a specific diet that could help similar to
an anti-candida diet etc?

Lastly, are some people carriers of D fragilis or does the parasite always
need to be totally eradicated?

I would be very grateful if you could give me some advice.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
D.W.

Dear Jackie,
Thank you so much for replying to my email.

I got in touch with the London School of Tropical Med. & Hygiene.

They recommended I get in touch with the IBS Clinic, Oxford, which I
have done.

They were really helpful and said that 95% of their patients with IBS
are in fact infected with D. fragilis!
They are having fantastic results
treating this. Apparently, it looks like there are different strains
of D. fragilis and this could be why there are such varied degrees of
symptoms.
Studies are being carried out at the London School of Tropical Medicine at the moment and it all looks very exciting.

Trials are also being carried out at the Middlesex Hospital in London.

Anyway the Oxford clinic has said that if I fax them my Great Smokies
test results they will be happy to treat me.

My only concern is whether or not I will tolerate the antibiotics,
apparently there is a fourth one they can use in from the USA. I shall listen to
their advice and give it a go.

I have been on a dairy, yeast and sugar free diet for two years which I
believe has also helped my symptoms. Although, I have recently reintroduced
white bread and Manuka honey made by Comvita, which is a New Zealand
honey that has been found to contain antibacterial properties, etc.

My main symptoms are loose stools/crampy diarrhoea not constipation and nasal congestion. Before the anti-candida diet I was always ill with a constant headache and various sensitivities due, I believe, to a low and overloaded immune system.

I will let you know how I get on.

Thank you very much for the information on your web page. Our 5 year old son has been having intestinal problems for three years. We have gone to the doctor many times and he has been treated for everything from sinus problems to stomach viruses to irritable bowel syndrome. Just today we received a lab report that revealed dientamoeba fragilis. The pediatric gastroenterologist had never heard of it and the pediatrician had to look in two different books to find it. I told my wife that after visiting your site, it seemed we knew more than the doctors did about this. The pediatrician did prescribe iodiquinol, which I was glad to see was one of the drugs mentioned on your siteas a good treatment. My only concern is that there is no standardized dosage for children.
Anyway, thank you again for your helpful information!
J.

Thank you for the interest in my son's condition. The doctor prescribed Iodoquinol 210 mg for the twenty day treatment. He was tested for D. fragilis after the twenty days, but there was some still detected in the sample, so the doctor again put him on another twenty day regimen of Iodoquinol 210 mg. We are hoping this second treatment will take care of the infection. I will try to let you know how this second treatment turns out. He just started it the other day. By the way, no I don't mind if you add my e-mail to your web site. People need to know what is going on. Thanks again for your concern.
J.

Yes, that is correct. It took 3 rounds to clear the infection. Please do post that information on your site, so others can know that it might take several attempts to get rid of it. I believe your site already mentions that possibility, but here is further evidence and documentation. Keep up the good work. If I get ant new information, I will surely pass it on to you.
J.

Hello! Sorry to take so long to reply. My son had to take another round of medication, but is now infection free. The change in him is incredible!
Thank you again for your helpful information!
Sincerely, J

Flagyl x 1 course failed to alleviate symptoms. Stool sample tested positive for DF after treatment with Flagyl.

Outcome:
Cured. DF cleared from stool samples & symptoms gone.

I have been diagnosed with Dientamoeba fragilis. I had stools that alternated loose to solid ever since returning from Mexico in 1993. I've also had various levels of constipation, bloating, heartburn (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). My doctor prescribed Iodoqynol but I tried a holistic practice first which consisted of wormwood, cloves and black walnut. The program worked very well from a symptoms standpoint and my stools have been solid for two months and my entire GI tract has been much more natural. However, a recent stool sample shows I'm still infected with DF. I'd be very interested in hearing some of the information you have.
Sincerely,
JL

Thanks again for the information. You've obviously done a lot of excellent research. All the pharmacies in my town don't have iodoquinol. They say it has been recalled by the manufacturer. I've heard of DF and Candida both being able to burrow into the intestinal walls of the intestines. One thing that seemed to work for me was to put psycillium (sp?) husks in a spice grinder, grind them up and then mix them with water and whatever substance you want to "rub" into the intestinal walls such as caprillic acid, iodoquinol, nystatin, etc. The psycillium becomes very gel-like and transports the medicine through the stomach and the seeds act as mild abrasive to push the medicine into the intestinal walls. It also helps keep you regular which is so important for bowel health.
Epstein-Barr is the virus that causes mono, not herpes, although it is in the herpes family. 80% of people with Epstein-Barr also have candida problems. Most Americans have dormant Epstein-Barr but GI tract disorders and other immune system diseases tend to bring it out of dormancy. (As well as stress and paint fumes.) Fatigue is the primary symptom so it complicates diagnoses of candida or other GI tract problems.
Anyway.... Thanks again.... JL

In response to your questions: I tested positive for entomeaba histolytica (which often accompanies DF) in 1996 and took metronidazole (sp?) for it which apparently worked. I was not diagnosed with DF at that time. 3 stool samples taken in late Sept. 99 all contained DF (no histolytica). The stool sample kits contained two viles, both with some type of preservative and were analyzed at a local lab. My doctor basically understands that I understand what I'm doing with my health and so simply orders testing I request. He's great in that regard although not much help in treatment. I did the cloves, wormwood, black walnut treatment for 2.5 months and retested. All 3 samples again showed "many" DF. However, my stool consistency has greatly improved as has my energy level. (Although I also have candida and the chronic version of the Epstein-Barr virus and am trying many things for those problems so it's hard to determine what's helping what.) My symptoms include low energy levels, gas, cramping, a rash on my things, and loose stools.
JL

Just thought you might like to hear a success story. I read that one of the reasons it's so difficult to rid the body of DF is because they can hide in hardened mucosoid layers within the colon where anti-parasitic medicines cannot reach them. I did a 7 day fast and colon cleanse using a program called Purify Thyself which involved psyllium husk, betonite clay, and an array of herbs to stimulate the colon to rid itself of hardened mucosoid. Then I did 20 days on Yodoxin. Two weeks after finishing the Yodoxin I did a stool test and for the first time it came back negative. (Yeah!!!!) My stools have been solid and normal for over a month and I feel much better.
Hope your finding some success. |

Hey Jackie!
Yes, life is good. My digestive system is a friend again and my energy levels have not been this high since college. I just got back from a four day backpacking trip north of Mt. Hood. I haven't done a stool test recently but my stools have been normal so I think I'm still in the clear.

Hi...... The drug iodoquinol was prescribed by our doctor (as suggested by a reply to my queries). There was an almost immediate response...he got his color back and has never had such symptoms again, i.e. periods of fatigue and pale skin. However I believe he is suffering from damage related to this beast (circumstantial for sure). He remains very shy (a learned response) of tomato based products, such as pizza and spaghetti sauces (tomato soup and ketchup are fine). His stomach (or perhaps lower intestine) remains sensitive perhaps not to tomatoes per se but likely to the added spices. A specialist confirmed Crohns was not it. Which came first, chicken or egg I can't say, that is, whether the infection and aversion to some tomato based products are related OR were they separate conditions. I believe they are related only because of the overlapping timeframes.
Hope this helps...thanks for checking back.

Hi Jackie
I'm interested in your story but all four of my family have been diagnosed with fraglis. We're taking diodoquin. I always use natural methods, herbs, homeopathy, and acupuncture but in this case even the natural practioners and esp those from third world countries suggested antibiotics. I'm a librarian and I'd like to see what literature you found
J.

Dear Jackie:
Thanks for writing. I had forgotten to let you know of our results. My son Cristian from Guatemala still has df despite 3 courses of flagyl and one course of an herbal parasitic program called Para (black walnut, fresh clove and wormwood) which successfully killed the amoeba the first time that he had it in 1994. My former husband's was eliminated by taking the diodoquin.(horrid medication). That did not work for me and I refused to take it a second time and took instead a supplement called Parex by Metagenics of San Clemente, California recommended by my naturopath. It contains artemisia annua, Grapefruit seed extract and ficin. It is too strong for children. I also took an herbal cleanser Multi-Herb and Multi-Fiber by Nature's Secret, Box 66457 Los Angeles California 90066 and continue to take acidophilus, hydochloric acid and pancreatic enzymes. The 1st course of flagyl worked for my younger son however he still had pin worms which I treated successfully with the Para Program. There is a link between df and pin. They often exist together. As of the last testing we were all free of df except for poor Cristian who does have digestive problems which we have been working on over the years. I hope that this information is of use to others. I look at your website too. Thanks for writing.

Hi,
Thankyou so much for your informative story on this nasty parasite. Our 12 year old daughter was just diagnosed with D.Fragilis after coming down with vomiting and diarrhia which she has not been able to shake. We had just spent 2 weeks in Egypt where she contracted the parasite, but fortunately, maybe due to the fact we live in the Boston area where the medical resources are outstanding, her problem was discovered early.
The doctor requested the 3 (actually 4) stool samples and they are now coming up with a plan of treatment.
We have only been home from our trip 1 1/2 weeks. After reading your story, I am so greatful this was diagnosed and will be treated early. I am hoping she will experience no long term effects from it.....
Thankyou for your valuable web site.
Terry

Jackie,
The doctor and pharmacy finally worked out the plan of treatment for my daughter yesterday as they were having a tough time coming up with the correct dosage for a 12 year old and were hoping for the 7 day plan.
We were not so fortunate so she is on Yodoxin, 210mg, 2 pills 3x a day for 20 days
.
She has been much more herself...the diarrhia has slowed down. I am hoping for the best. Both my husband and I did have vomiting and diarrhia at the end of our trip but have been fine since we got home.. I will let you know how she is doing.
Terry

Dear Jackie,
My daughter has fully recovered from her ordeal from this summer. She did not do well on the medication so her whole summer was really shot, but at least now since school started back she is back to her old self. The medication seemed to make her nauseous and if she had an active day, the next day she would crash. She had a follow up appointment with her pediatrician after she finished the medication and she gained her weight back but we still need to do a follow up stool sample which I have been lax in taking care of. (It is on my to-do list) I was tested for DF and the results were negative. My husband never followed through on testing and is relying on my negative test. He also has had no problems since our return.
Hope this info helps and feel free to use it on your website.
Thanks again for all the valuable info.
